- Struck out 186 batters in 156 innings during his Wake Forest career and led the team in strikeouts in 1984 and 1985
- Second in school history for strikeouts per nine innings at 10.73 (among pitchers with 100 or more innings)
- Holds ACC Tournament record of 18 strikeouts in one game vs. #1 Virginia (1985)
- 1985 selected to U.S.A. team and finished 5-1 with a 1.41 ERA
- 1985 selected 1st Team Summer All-American
- 1986 selected 1st Team Pre-Season All-American
- 1986 Seattle Mariners 2nd round draft pick (36th overall)
- Played 11 years in the Major Leagues for the Seattle Mariners, Cincinnati Reds, Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays and compiled a record of 89-84 with a 4.15 ERA, 1,175 strikeouts in 1,551.3 innings over the course of his professional career
- Went 18-9 with Seattle in 1990 and 15-5 with Boston in 1995
- 1995 selected to MLB All-Star Team with the Boston Red Sox
- Upon retirement from baseball, he pursued a career in competitive amateur golf and has been very successful in his endeavor. Locally, regionally and nationally, his numerous championship victories include wins in professional State Opens and, to date, played in 17 USGA national championships.
