Wray Cannaday Chosen As Assistant Women's Basketball Coach

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wray Cannaday has been named assistant women's basketball coach at Wake Forest University, Demon Deacon head coach Charlene Curtis announced today. Cannaday's responsibilities will include serving as the team's recruiting coordinator and working with the Deacon guards. He replaces Stacy Cox, who departed in August after two years on the WFU staff.

Cannaday comes to Wake Forest after serving as the head women's basketball coach at Mott Junior College in Flint, Mich., since 1990. During his nine seasons at Mott, Cannaday's teams had seven winning seasons, posting a combined record of 116-124. He guided his 1998-99 squad to a 24-12 overall record, including appearances in the regional and state finals as well as the National Junior College Athletic Association Final Four. Mott's fourth-place national finish that year earned Cannaday Region H Coach of the Year and Eastern Conference Coach of the Year honors, as well as the Garber Sportsmanship Award. In addition, his 1996-97 team advanced to the state quarterfinals, while his 1995-96 team reached the semifinals. During his tenure at Mott, Cannaday coached one junior college All-American and five Academic All-Americans, and his teams had a 98 percent graduation rate.

Cannaday has also served as a teacher, coach, and administrator in the Flint community school system since 1979. Prior to moving to Michigan, he served as a teacher and coach in the Roanoke, Va., school system from 1978-79.

Cannaday received his undergraduate degree in elementary education from Salisbury State in 1977, and earned a master's degree from Eastern Michigan University in 1986. He is currently pursuing his doctoral degree in curriculum and instruction from Wayne State University.
