WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The seventh-seeded Virginia Cavaliers scored two early goals in Friday's second semifinal game, defeating Wake Forest 2-1 to advance to Sunday,s championship game of the 1999 ACC Men's Soccer Tournament at Spry Stadium.
Ryan Trout scored both Virginia goals, the first coming only 1:47 into the contest. Cavalier goalkeeper David Comfort passed a long ball down field to Trout, who knocked the ball into the near post past Wake Forest,s Sean Conner. Trout scored what would prove to be the game-winner on a breakaway in the 32nd minute. The forward chipped the ball just under Conner's hands after Kenny Arena served the ball from midfield.
Wake Forest's Chris Lonteen put the Deacons on the board, sailing a ball over Comfort's head from 10 yards out in the 52nd minute of play. The Deacs were unable to mount a comeback, however, and Virginia held on for the 2-1 win.
Virginia improves to 12-7-1 and will face Duke at 3:30 at Spry Soccer Stadium in the tournament,s title game. Wake Forest falls to 12-2-5 overall.
