WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest used a crucial second half goal by Emily Taggart to advance past No. 18 Michigan Saturday afternoon 1-0 in the second round of the 1999 NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament. The game marked the first ever meeting between the Deacons and a Big 10 school.
Michigan midfielder Mari Hoff had a chance to put the Wolverines on top in the 32nd minute of action, but a back save by defender Karli Schilling kept the game scoreless going into the second half. Taggart, a sophomore forward, collected a loose ball from five yards out and sent it past Wolverine goalkeeper Carissa Stewart in the 64th minute to give the Deacons their 16th win of the season. Midfielder Anne Shropshire sent the ball into the box before forward Joline Charlton knocked it into the path of Taggart, who shot it past Stewart's outstretched arms.
Wake Forest held on in the remaining 20 minutes to preserve the win. Michigan outshot the Demon Deacons, registering 14 shots on goal in 90 minutes. Wake Forest had 12 shots, including seven in the first half. Deacon goalkeeper Erin Regan recorded six saves on the afternoon, while Stewart had three. Taggart and Charlton each had three shots for Wake Forest. Hoff finished with a game-high five shots on goal for Michigan.
The Deacons improve to 16-6-0 on the season and will face the winner of the Clemson/Marquette match in the third round. The game will be played next Friday, Saturday or Sunday at a site and time yet to be determined. Michigan ends its season at 17-6-1.
