WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest senior Michael Capone (Cranston, R.I.) was named to the Golfweek/Sagarin Honorable Mention All-District men's golf squad, it was announced today.
Capone was the Deacs' most consistent player during the 1998-99 season, playing in 14 events and recording a team-low 72.8 stroke average. He earned five top 10 finishes and placed in the top 20 three other times, shooting at or under par in 21 of 39 rounds. Capone won the first individual tournament title of his career this spring, carding three consecutive rounds in the 60s (68-68-69) to win the Wofford College Invitational. His strong play earned him an individual bid to the 1999 NCAA East Regional, where he finished tied for fifth to advance to the NCAA Championships in Minnesota last week. Capone was eliminated from the NCAAs after two rounds of play, shooting 77-78 to miss the 36-hole cut. Capone was ranked No. 66 in the nation in the final edition of the Golfweek/Sagarin player rankings.
