WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - Quarterback Daniel Jeremiah's 1-yard run in overtime gave Division I-AA Appalachian State a 30-27 victory over Wake Forest on Saturday night.
Wake Forest (2-2) had the ball first in overtime and moved to the 11-yard line when quarterback Brian Kuklick found Jammie Deese for 14 yards on first down. But two running plays netted only four yards and Kuklick overthrew Marvin Chalmers on third down, forcing the Demon Deacons to settle for Matthew Burdick's 23-yard field goal.
Appalachian State (4-0), ranked No. 10 in last week's Division I-AA poll, picked up a first down on its possession, reaching the Wake 13. Terrence McCall then took a pitch from Jeremiah and reached the 1, setting up the winning sneak on 1st and goal.
Wake forced overtime by driving 74 yards in 13 plays. The drive began with 5:28 to play and was highlighted by six Kuklick completions, four to all-ACC wide receiver Desmond Clark.
The Mountaineers stretched Wake to 4th-and-goal from the 6 before allowing a six-yard touchdown pass from Kuklick to Deese with 53 seconds left. Burdick kicked the extra point to tie the game after matching a school record with a 53-yard field goal earlier in the game.
Both teams were playing in their first overtime games.
