GLENVIEW, Ill.-- Senior Michael Capone (Cranston, RI) and freshman Jay Morgan (Choctaw, OK) both shot 70's in the first round of the Windon Memorial Classic to lift the Wake Forest men's golf team to a second-place standing after 18 holes of play. With a team score of 1-over 289, the Deacs are just five strokes back of team leader Stanford, who tallied a 4-under 284.
Capone and Morgan are four strokes back of the trio of players tied for the individual lead. Northwestern's Luke Donald, Texas' David Gossett, and Stanford's Joel Kribel all shot 4-under 68's in the first round to share first place. WFU senior Oscar Sanchez (Canary Island, Spain) shot a 2-over 74 on the day and stands in a tie for 25th place, while junior Jamie Gallacher (Surrey, England) shot a 3-over 75 and is tied for 30th. Sophomore Ryan Peiffer (Winston-Salem, NC), who shot an 81, is tied for 57th place.
The teams were scheduled to play 36 holes on Monday, but rain forced the cancellation of the first 18 holes of play. The tournament has since been shortened to a 36-hole event, with the final 18 holes being played on Tuesday. The event is being played on the 7,031-yard, par-72 course at the North Shore Country Club in Glenview, IL.
