WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior midfielder Kyle Bachmeier (Winston-Salem, NC/West Forsyth) set up three goals to tie the Wake Forest all-time assist record as the Demon Deacons blew past visiting Charleston Southern, 6-2, in front of 514 fans at Spry Stadium. Bachmeier's three set-ups pushed his career total to 24 assists, tying the career mark set by former Deacon Mark Erwin from 1980-83.
Senior midfielder Serge Daniv and sophomore forward Ben Stafford each contributed two goals in the win, which increased the Deacs' overall record to 10-3-1. Charleston Southern fell to 9-4-1 on the year. Daniv opened the scoring just 12:53 into the match, stealing a pass from CSU netminder Rob Tilley to a Buccaneer defender and tapping it in the net. The Buccaneers tied it up at 26:21 on a goal from freshman midfielder Sami Ojala, who knocked in a long cross from Kirch Spencer. Stafford then scored two goals in a span of 3:10 to give Wake a two-goal cushion, the second of which was set up in part by Bachmeier.
CSU cut the deficit to one early in the second period on a Chris Kelly goal, but the Deacs answered with a three-goal barrage by junior forward Greg Krauss, Daniv, and sophomore forward Jaron Barbeee in a span of 7:36 to put the game away. Bachmeier set up the first and the last goal in that trio of scores to tie the all-time assist mark.
The Deacs dominated the game offensively, outshooting the Bucs 29-5 and holding a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. Tilley made six saves in goal for CSU, while junior Sean Conner made one save for Wake before being relived by junior Patrick O'Keefe late in the game. Wake Forest hosts Maryland in a key ACC matchup this Saturday, October 24, at 7:00 p.m.
