WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Senior forward Jon Mabee scored 6:34 into overtime to lift No. 24 UNC Charlotte over No. 20 Wake Forest, 2-1, in a men's soccer contest at Spry Stadium on Friday night.
Wake Forest (3-1) controlled much of the play in the first half, outshooting UNCC (3-0) by a 10-3 margin. The Demon Deacons got on board first on a goal by freshman midfielder Jamal Seale, who took a feed from sophomore Peter Walsh to the the left of the goal and stuck one in the right corner at the 33:45 mark. The 49ers' Dusty Reineke evened the score at 41:22, beating Deacon goalie Sean Conner on a one-on-one breakaway. Pablo Pinzon and C.J. Robinson set up Reineke's score.
Although neither team found the net in the second half, the game's momentum clearly began to turn in UNCC's favor. The 49ers continued to step up the offensive pressure, and fired off three shots in overtime before Wake even got off one. The game-winner came as a UNCC cross deflected off of several WFU players in front of the net, and Mabee collected the ball to score on a point-blank shot. John McDonough made 10 saves in goal for UNCC, while Conner had four on the night.
Wake Forest next travels to Radford for a 7:00 pm game on Tuesday, September 15th.
