WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-- Senior midfielder Kyle Bachmeier and sophomore forward Ben Stafford scored goals just 2:42 apart in the second half as the No. 19 Wake Forest men's soccer team knocked off No. 9 South Carolina by a score of 2-1 at Spry Stadium on Tuesday night. The win improves the Demon Deacons' record to 11-4-1 overall, while the Gamecocks drop to 11-4.
Wake Forest controlled much of the first-half play, outshooting USC 8-2, but neither team managed a score before halftime. Bachmeier's goal at the 53:32 mark came on a penalty kick, which was awarded after USC's Hans Whitestone pulled down Wake's Trent Lind inside the box.
Stafford's goal followed shortly thereafter on a tremendous play, as he stole the ball from a Gamecock defender and streaked toward the goal, beating USC netminder Henry Ring for the score. USC then mounted a late offensive charge, cutting the deficit to one when Ryan O'Neill scored from five yards out off a pass from Anders Ronnevig at 73:29. The Gamecocks generated a flurry of shots in the game's waning minutes, but the Deacon defense held strong to secure the win.
The game featured a matchup between one the nation's fifth-ranked scoring offense in Wake Forest and the 11th-best scoring defense in the country in South Carolina. The match escalated into an extremely physical one, with a total of six yellow cards issued to both teams. Ring made four saves in net for USC, and junior Sean Conner collected four stops in goal for the Deacs.
Wake Forest travels to North Carolina on Sunday, November 1 at 2:00 pm.
