WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-- Junior forward Greg Krauss netted his first career hat-trick as the Wake Forest men's soccer team rolled past UNC Asheville, 6-1, in front of 902 fans at Spry Stadium on Tuesday night. The victory was the Demon Deacons' third straight, pushing their record to 7-2-1 overall. UNC Asheville dropped to 1-9 on the year.
After leading 1-0 at halftime on a Viktor Litovka goal, the Deacons blew the game open with five goals in the second period. Krauss scored just three minutes into the second half off an assist from sophomore forward Ben Stafford, then scored again less than 10 minutes later on a breakaway pass from senior midfielder Kyle Bachmeier. Stafford made it 4-1 as he blasted a rebound from the top of the box past UNCA keeper Jerry Hancock. The Bulldogs finally got on the board at 66:47 with a goal from Brian Fairchild, who snuck a deflected ball past Wake keeper Sean Conner. Krauss completed his hat-trick with a breakaway goal at 74:50, and Bachmeier finished off the scoring with a goal less than a minute later.
Wake outshot the Bulldogs 20-6 and held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. Conner made two saves in goal before being relieved by sophomore Todd Zolcinski, while Hancock had three saves before being replaced by Marc Villegas.
Wake Forest travels to NC State on Sunday, October 11th, for a 2 p.m. match.
