WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Sophomore defender Jeff Burkett (Greensboro, NC/Wesleyan Christian) scored with 7:50 remaining in the game to lift the Wake Forest men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over visiting Virginia Tech in both team's season opener at Spry Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Demon Deacons (1-0) dominated the Hokies (0-1) throughout the game, as a stifling Wake defense allowed just two shots on goal all night. Wake fired 25 shots at Tech keeper Alexey Salmin (Northport, NY), but had trouble finding their target until late in the game. After missing two point-blank opportunities at close range, Burkett gathered a deflected David Kaweesi-Mukooza (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville) pass and rocketed it in from the top of the box to give Wake the win. Salmin netted five saves on the night for VT.
Wake Forest is next in action this weekend, when the Deacs host the 10th Annual Nike-Wake Forest Soccer Classic. Action gets under way Friday night at 6:00 pm as North Carolina faces St. Bonaventure. Wake Forest will then play San Francisco at 8:00 pm.
