PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Wake Forest senior Michael Capone (Cranston, R.I.) shot a 4-over 75 in the second round of play to drop to 33rd place in the individual standings at the 1999 NCAA Men's Golf East Regional Championships. Capone is competing as an individual in the event, which is being played on the 6,734-yard, par-71 course at the Rhode Island Country Club in Providence, R.I. - just 20 minutes from his hometown.
Capone, who stood in sixth place after carding a 71 in the first round, is seven shots off the pace of the individual leaders - Georgia Tech's Matt Kuchar and South Alabama's D.J. Nelson - who stand at 2-under for the tournament. In the team standings, Georgia Tech increased its lead over the field to 10 strokes after shooting a 280 in the second round for a 36-hole total of 563, or 5-under par. Clemson shot a 282 on Friday to move up to second place at 573 (+5).
Twenty-three teams and five individuals are competing in the East Regional, with the top 11 teams and two individuals advancing to the NCAA Championships in Chaska, Minn., on June 2-5. Capone can only advance as an individual, meaning he must be one of the top two finishers who is not a member of the 11 qualifying squads.
