CHASKA, Minn. -- Wake Forest senior Michael Capone (Cranston, R.I.) recorded a 5-over 77 in the first round of play at the 1999 NCAA Men's Golf Championships, held at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, MN. Capone is representing Wake Forest in the event as an individual competitor.
With five threesomes still on the course at approximately 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, Capone stood nine strokes behind the individual leader in the clubhouse, East Tennessee State's Chris Wisler. Wisler carded a 4-under 68 in the first round and holds a two-stroke lead on the rest of the field.
Thirty teams and six individuals are competing in the 72-hole event, with a cut being made after 36 holes of play. After tomorrow's second round, only the top 15 teams and the top nine individuals not on those teams will continue into Friday and Saturday's rounds.
