PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Wake Forest senior Michael Capone (Cranston, R.I.) fired an even-par 71 in the first round of play to stand tied for sixth place in the individual standings at the 1999 NCAA Men's Golf East Regional Championships. Capone is competing as an individual in the event, which is being played on the 6,734-yard, par-71 course at the Rhode Island Country Club in Providence, R.I. - just 20 minutes from his hometown.

Capone, who carded a 36 on the front nine and a 35 on the back, stands just two shots off the pace of the three individual leaders - Georgia Tech's Bryce Molder, Rhode Island's Mike Sims, and Duke's Matt Krauss - who shot 69s. In the team standings, Georgia Tech holds a three stroke edge on South Carolina after shooting a 1-under 283 on the first 18 holes.

Twenty-three teams and five individuals are competing in the East Regional, with the top 11 teams and two individuals advancing to the NCAA Championships in Chaska, Minn., on June 2-5. Capone can only advance as an individual, meaning he must be one of the top two finishers who is not a member of the 11 qualifying squads.
