WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Twenty Wake Forest freshmen turned in their second day of two-a-day practice sessions here Tuesday and now await the arrival of the team's veteran players who report Wednesday.

Tomorrow (August 12) is a day of academic meetings and orientation for the Demon Deacon newcomers, while the returning players will undergo physicals and strength evaluations.

Thursday (April 13) is the annual team "Photo Day" at Groves Stadium. That event begins at 1 p.m. and is open to the public.

The Deacon freshman class, which consists of 15 scholarship players, has had a quick but productive introduction to Wake Forest, according to head coach Jim Caldwell.

"This really is an impressive group," Caldwell noted Tuesday. "It is without question one of the most athletic classes that we have brought in, and I can sense that there are some real leaders in this class as well. We may even see a couple of them out there on Saturdays a little sooner than we have seen freshmen in the past."

If any of the '98 rookies see action this season, it would be a departure from what has been the norm at Wake Forest. Caldwell's commitment to a redshirting program has resulted in 61 of the 66 scholarship players currently in the program being redshirted. All 17 of last year's freshmen qualified for redshirt status.
