WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest football team officially opened preseason practice for the 1998 season here Friday with two workouts, one at 6:45 a.m. and a second at 4 p.m.

Head coach Jim Caldwell termed the day "a refresher course" for the Demon Deacons.

"Since we hadn't had the opportunity to work together since last spring, today was as much a mental workout as it was physical," Caldwell said. "We spent quite a bit of time reviewing, but with the amount of experience that we have on this year's squad, hopefully we'll be able to move on quickly."

The afternoon session was anything but refreshing for the 103 players taking part. Hot (86-degree temperature) and humid conditions, though, were much to Caldwell's liking.

"We have to be prepared to play in conditions such as this, so we're thankful for the warm weather," he noted.

The Deacs will workout twice more on Saturday, then have just one practice scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
