Georgia Eliminates Deacons From NCAA Tourney

ATHENS, Ga. - Georgia midfielder Sue Weathersbee scored two goals and added an assist to lead Georgia to a 5-2 upset victory over 17th-ranked Wake Forest in the first round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament, Friday in Athens, GA.
With the victory, the Bulldogs improved to 13-5-1 on the season and will advance to play Virginia in the second round of the tournament on Saturday. The Deacons finished the 1998 season with a record of 13-7-1.
The Bulldogs struck for two goals early in the first half as Weathersbee scored the first of her goals just 4:35 into the match off of a feed from Beth Lewis. Mandy Aiken then gave Georgia a 2-0 lead just over six minutes later when she connected off a pass from Allison Thornbury at the 10:51 mark.
Georgia then scored two more goals in rapid succession late in the half, Stephanie Yarem scored what proved to be the game winner at 32:40 when she finished off a cross from Thornbury and beat Demon Deacon goalkeeper Sari Rose. Nikki Ornelaz gave the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead just 3:07 later when she took a pass from Weathersbee and put a shot into the upper right corner.
Sophomore defender Rachel Lewis put Wake Forest on the board in the first half when she beat Georgia goalkeeper Nicole Williams with a shot to the lower right corner of the net.
Georgia upped the margin to four once again when Weathersbee scored her second goal of the game off of a pass from Aiken at the 64:37 mark. Deacon senior Jessen Snyder capped the scoring in the match midway through the second half as she stole the ball and beat Williams at the 71:17 mark.
This was Wake Forest's third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
