DALTON, Ga. - Paced by the outstanding play of senior Michael Capone, the Wake Forest men's golf team earned a sixth-place finish in a strong 18-team field at the Carpet Capital Classic, played on the 6,905-yard, par-72 course at The Farm Golf Club in Dalton, Ga.

Capone fired a career-low 66 in the opening round on Friday morning to take the individual lead in the tournament, helping the Demon Deacons to a season-low team round of 285, or 3-under par. Wake stood in third place after that first round, then slipped to fourth after shooting an even-par 288 in the second round on Friday afternoon. The Deacs struggled in Saturday's final round however, carding a 19-over 307 to earn the sixth-place finish. Georgia earned the team title with a 54-hole score of 858, or 6-under, 22 strokes ahead of the Deacs.

Capone shot 72-74 in the final two rounds to finish out with a career-low-tying 54-hole score of 212, or 4-under. He finished eight strokes behind individual champion Bryce Molder of Georgia Tech, the 1998 collegiate player of the year.

Senior Thomas Parker shot 74-71-78 to finish the event at 223, or 7-over par, good for a 40th-place finish. Senior Juan Vizcaya (77-71-78) and junior Jamie Gallacher (72-77-77) both carded 10-over 226's to finish tied for 50th place. Senior Oscar Sanchez, who won the Carpet Capital as a sophomore in 1997, finished in 66th place with a 12-over 228 after shooting 73-74-81.

The Deacs are next in action at the BellSouth Intercollegiate in Cary, N.C., on April 9-10.
