WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Four golfers signed national letters of intent to play at Wake Forest during the November early signing period, it was announced by Wake Forest Head Men's Golf Coach Jerry Haas. All four will enroll at Wake Forest as freshmen in the fall of 1999.
The men's golf signees:
Brent Wanner (Orleans, MA/Nauset Regional H.S.)
Wanner is a talented golfer and an outstanding student who fared extremely
well in three national tournaments in 1998. He placed second in both the
Big I Insurance Youth Classic and the Francis Ouimet Amateur, and placed
third in the U.S. Junior Qualifier. He was one of only three players to
break par in the U.S. Junior.
Chad Wilfong (Thomasville, NC/East Davidson H.S.)
Wilfong is the two-time defending North Carolina state individual champion,
having won the event in both his sophomore and junior seasons at East
Davidson High. He also won the George Holliday Memorial Tournament and the
Plantations Junior Golf Tournament this past year. An outstanding putter
with a tremendous short game, Wilfong has posted a low round of 64 in
tournament competition.
Buck Williams (Raleigh, NC/Broughton H.S.)
Williams led Broughton High to the North Carolina state team championship
last year, placing third in the event individually. He also won the
Mid-Pines Junior Invitational, was second at the North-South Junior
Championship, and was fifth at the AJGA Woodlands Invitational last year.
Williams' father, Ed, is a Wake Forest alumnus (though not a former Deacon
golfer).
Chris Yoder (Ashland, OH/Ashland H.S.)
Yoder led his Ashland High team to the Ohio state team title last year,
placing third individually. He posted five Top 5 finishes in AJGA events
in the summer of 1998, and won both the Lexington Invitational and the St.
Charles Invitational. An extremely consistent golfer, Yoder is currently
the 20th ranked junior golfer in the nation.
