WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Ten high school prospects, including one of the nation's premier quarterbacks, have officially accepted football scholarships to Wake Forest by signing a national letter-of-intent today, Demon Deacon head coach Jim Caldwell has announced.

The 1999 freshman class is smaller than normal because the Demon Deacons lost only 10 scholarship seniors from their 1998 squad. The group does, however, include C.J. Leak of Charlotte, one of the country's most sought after prep quarterbacks.

In three years on the high school level, the last two at Independence High, Leak passed for 5,884 yards and 63 touchdowns while throwing only 12 interceptions. He also rushed for 1,425 yards and 36 TDs during his brilliant career. Leak has been named the top quarterback in the South by "Fox Sports" and the nation's 27th- best prospect at any position by "The Sporting News."

"Because we lost so few seniors, we felt that we could be very, very selective with this class," Caldwell said in making the announcement. "It is a small group in numbers, but we feel without question that this class will have the greatest impact on our program of any that we have recruited. This certainly is a quality group of young men who will add ability and character to our squad and help us improve considerably.
