WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Defender Melissa Murray-Hobbs (Atlanta, GA/Lakeside) has signed a national letter of intent to play soccer at Wake Forest, head coach Tony da Luz announced today. She will enroll at Wake Forest in the fall of 1999.
A three year starter for Lakeside High School, Murray-Hobbs led her school to the Georgia AAA championship game in 1997 and to the state semifinals in 1998. She earned first-team all-county and region honors in 1996, 1997 and 1998.
Murray-Hobbs has played with the Stone Mountain Spirit club team since 1997 and led her team to the USA Cup championship in 1998. She has been a member of the Georgia state ODP team for the past four years. Murray-Hobbs joins a group of five other Demon Deacon signees - midfielder Katie Johnson (Virginia Beach, VA), forward Joline Charlton (Stone Mountain, GA), defender Liz McDowell (Lakewood, CO), midfielder Lindsey Griffin (Englewood, CO), and midfielder Gabi Lieb (Greensboro, NC) - to increase to total number of Wake Forest signees to six.
These six newcomers join 12 returning letterwinners from Wake Forest's 1998 team that finished with a record of 13-7-1 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season.
