WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Freshman Emily Taggart recorded her first career hat trick to lead No. 16 Wake Forest to a 7-0 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over visiting NC State on Friday night at Spry Stadium. With the victory, Wake Forest improves to 10-3-1 overall and 3-1 in the ACC. NC State falls to 5-9 and 0-4 in league play.
The Demon Deacons jumped on the scoreboard at the 9:23 mark in the first half when Taggart scored from 10 yards out. She added her second goal of the game at 29:46 off a pass from Anne Shropshire. Julie Scott gave Wake Forest a 3-0 lead in the first half when she scored at 35:04 off another pass from Shropshire.
Wake Forest continued their offensive attack in the second half when Taggart netted her third goal of the game at 58:46. Stefanie Mathews (75:29), Karli Schilling (83:09) and Meghan Suddes (89:57) all added second half goals to give the Demon Deacons the 7-0 victory.
Demon Deacon goalkeepers Erin Regan and Sari Rose combined for the shutout while NC State goalkeeper Sara Marino made seven saves on the night. Wake Forest outshot the Wolfpack 24-6 in the game. The Demon Deacons return to action on Sunday when they host UNC Greensboro at 1 p.m. at Spry Stadium.
