Women's Soccer Edges Maryland in Overtime

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Junior Anne Shropshire scored with just 3:54 remaining in overtime to lead 14th-ranked Wake Forest to a 3-2 victory over 23rd-ranked Maryland on Sunday afternoon at Spry Stadium. With the victory, Wake Forest improves to 12-4-1 overall and 4-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Maryland falls to 8-8-1 and 3-4 in league play.

Maryland jumped on the scoreboard first at the 26:48 mark in the first half when Robin McCullough scored on a long shot from 25 yards out. The Demon Deacons rallied to take the lead with two goals from senior Andrea Pelletier in the second half at 60:20 and 62:09. Pelletier, who was making her first appearance in a month after suffering a broken wrist, scored both goals off passes from Stefanie Mathews.

Maryland tied the score at 2-2 with just 7:03 left in regulation when Emily Janss scored after a free kick. Both teams had a number of chances to score in the overtime period. Janss was awarded a penalty kick in the game's 97th minute but Wake Forest goalkeeper Sari Rose made a fantastic save to keep the Deacons' chances alive, while Mathews had a shot hit the crossbar in the 110th minute for the Deacs.

Shropshire's game-winning goal came in the game's 117th minute when the Deacons mounted an ambush on Maryland goalkeeper Riki-Ann Serrins. Serrins staved off shots from Mathews and Rachel Thomas before Shropshire knocked the rebound into the back of the net from 10 yards out. Wake Forest dominated play throughout much of the game, outshooting the Terrapins 31-16 in the. A shot by Emily Taggart hit the right post in the 20th minute while a Stacy Roeck attempt deflected off the corner of the crossbar in the 57th minute. Serrins was outstanding in goal for the Terps, making 13 saves in the game.

The Demon Deacons return to action on Friday when they host top-ranked North Carolina at 7 p.m. at Spry Stadium in the regular season finale. Maryland will host George Washington on Wednesday.
