Women's Soccer Tops South Carolina, 5-0

WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- Wake Forest senior forward Anne Shropshire scored two goals and added two assists to lead 23rd-ranked Wake Forest to a 5-0 victory over South Carolina in a NCAA women's soccer matchup at Spry Stadium on Friday night.
With the victory, Wake Forest improved to 1-0 on the year while South Carolina dropped to 0-1.
The Demon Deacons jumped on the scoreboard first at the 15:15 mark in the first half when Shropshire scored on a penalty kick. Freshman Joline Charlton made the score 2-0 before halftime with her first career goal, a 12-yard shot to the far post off a pass from Shropshire.
The Deacs stretched the lead to 3-0 at the 61:24 mark when sophomore Sarah Kate Noftsinger found the back of the net from 10 yards out off a pass from Emily Taggart. Shropshire netted her second goal of the game at 80:33 when she finished a cross from freshman Lindsey Griffin. The Deacs made the score 5-0 when Charlton scored her second goal of the game at 86:08 off passes from Shropshire and freshman Liz McDowell.
Wake Forest goalkeeper Erin Regan made five saves to preserve the shutout, while USG keeper Carrie Walker recorded eight saves on the evening. Wake Forest outshot South Carolina, 24-12.
The Demon Deacons will return to action on Friday, September 3 when they face Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo. South Carolina will host Charleston Southern on Wednesday, September 1.
