In limited action, senior quarterback Ben Sankey stood out in Wake Forest?s second and final scrimmage of its fall practice period. Sankey completed seven of nine passes for 74 yards and a pair of touchdown passes as the Deacons wrapped up their final two-a-day practice session.
Sankey tossed a pair of three-yard scoring passes to senior wide receivers Jammie Deese and Marvin Chalmers in short goal-line situations. Deese, who enters the 1999 season with 152 career receptions, finished with four catches for 40 yards. Sophomore Ira Williams had four catches for 39 yards. Backup quarterback James MacPhearson completed six of 11 passes for 63 yards while freshman signalcaller C.J. Leak completed four of seven passes for 37 yards. None of the Deacon quarterbacks threw an interception.
?It was a good tough day,? said Wake Forest coach Jim Caldwell. ?I thought our defense hit well and ran to the ball well. They did a nice job of making adjustments out there. Offensively, we sputtered. We moved some guys around and did not have Ben Sankey in a whole lot in terms of being with the first-team offense. With the exception of a few miscues, he had a couple of really nice drives today. Ben is really coming along. Today, we wanted to work in James MacPhearson and C.J. Leak. Both of them are still very inexperienced, so this was a good opportunity for them. Neither played that well, but they are making progress.?
Petz Ineligible
Wake Forest coach Jim Caldwell announced today that junior defensive end Mat Petz is academically ineligible for the 1999 season. Petz, a two-time letterman, started all 11 games last season and accounted for 15 tackles for loss and six sacks. He will continue to practice with the team this year and can regain his eligibility for the 2000 season.
?He was certainly part of our plans for this year,? Caldwell said. ?Mat was in a competitive situation and we have some guys who have played the position before. We just have to reshuffle a little bit. We?ll have to slide another player over there. Maybe Kelvin Jones or Brad Smith.?
