WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 1999 preseason football schedule officially begins at Wake Forest here Wednesday (Aug.11) when the Demon Deacon freshmen report to campus.
Wednesday's schedule involves checking in at the residence hall, physical examinations, weight-training tests and meetings with the coaching staff. The group's first practice session will be Thursday (Aug.12) at 9:30 a.m. in Kentner Stadium on campus.
This year's class of newcomers includes nine scholarship freshmen, one transfer, and six walk-ons, and head coach Jim Caldwell is enthused about the potential that the incoming players bring to his program.
"This is a small class in terms of numbers because we had only 10 scholarship seniors last year," Caldwell says, "but it may be our best class yet in terms of quality. Of course, we won't know that for certain until we have the opportunity to work with them and see how they fit with our returning players, but I am really excited about the dynamics of this class and what they can provide us."
One freshman signee will not be reporting Wednesday, Caldwell said. Marcus Nesbitt, a 6'1, 205-pound linebacker from Clinton, MD, was not admitted to Wake Forest for the fall semester. Nesbitt plans to enroll in January, Caldwell added.
The class is bolstered, however, by the addition of Blake Henry, a 6'6, 275-pound offensive tackle, who started during the latter stages of the 1998 season as a true freshman at Northwestern. Henry must sit out the 1999 campaign per NCAA regulations but will have three seasons of eligibility remaining beginning in the fall of 2000.
The newcomers will have five practices as a group before the Deacon veterans report on Sunday (Aug.15). That schedule includes 9:30 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. workouts on Thursday and Saturday, and a 2 p.m. practice on Sunday.
