Men's Soccer Hosts Davidson, Opens ACC Play At Virginia

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The 24th-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team will host the Davidson Wildcats on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at Spry Stadium at 7 p.m. The Wildcats were ranked fifth with a record of 2-0, but lost three straight last week to drop to 2-3 on the season. This week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll has yet to be released. Wake Forest leads the all-time series with Davidson 12-4-1. The two teams met once last season with Wake winning 4-1 at Davidson.
After hosting the Wildcats, the Deacons open ACC play at the Virginia Cavaliers on Sunday, Sept. 19. Gametime is set for 2 p.m. The Cavaliers were ranked 14th last week, but lost their ACC opener to Maryland on Sunday and now have a record of 2-2 overall and 0-1 in ACC play. Last year's match between the Cavaliers and the Demon Deacons ended in a 2-2 deadlock. Virginia leads the all-time series 20-2-2.
WAKE DEFEATS LIBERTY, TIES SOUTH CAROLINA
Wake Forest remained unbeated with a home field win over Liberty on
Wednesday and a 3-3 tie at South Carolina on Saturday. In the win over
Liberty, sophomore Chris Lonteen scored both of the Decaons goals to lead
WFU to a 2-1 victory over the Flames. Sophomore Jamal Seale added an assist
for the Deacons.
In the South Carolina game, junior Jaron Barbee, sophomore Matt Thompson
and senior Greg Krauss each scored a goal, but South Carolina scored two
late goals to tie the game at 3-3 and force the game to overtime. After two
scoreless overtime periods, the game ended 3-3.
WAKE ENTERS COACHES ASSOCIATION NATIONAL POLL
Wake Forest, unranked in the preseason poll, entered the National Soccer
Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll at 24th after getting off to a
2-0 start. Other ACC teams included in the poll were Maryland (8th), Duke
(10th) and Virginia (14th). The only other Wake Forest opponent ranked in
the top 25 was Davidson at fifth.
LONTEEN AND BARBEE LEAD TEAM IN POINTS AND GOALS
Sophomore Chris Lonteen, who scored both Wake Forest goals in a 2-1 win
over Liberty Wednesday, leads the Deacons in points so far this season.
Lonteen has seven points on the season and is followd by junior Jaron
Barbee with six. Lonteen and Barbee are tied for the team lead in goals
with three apiece. Junior Ben Stafford and sophomore Jamal Seale lead the
Deacs in assists with two each. Senior goalkeeper Sean Conner has allowed
only six goals and has saved 17 shots in 390 minutes of play.
