Deacons To Host Nike-Wake Forest Classic

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 18th-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team will host the 1999 Nike-Wake Forest Classic Friday, Sept. 24 and Sunday, Sept. 26. On Friday, UNC-Charlotte and Vanderbilt kick things off with their game at 6 p.m. Next will be Wake Forest against the Richmond Spiders at 8 p.m. The tournament will resume on Sunday with UNC-Charlotte and Richmond playing at noon, followed by Wake Forest and Vanderbilt at 2 p.m. Wake Forest has played Richmond and Vanderbilt once each, with the Deacons holding a 1-0 edge against both schools. Wake hosted Richmond in 1988, coming away with a 5-0 victory. The Deacons' one game with Vanderbilt came in 1984, a 2-0 Deacon victory in Nashville.
WAKE SHUTS OUT DAVIDSON, TIES VIRGINIA IN ACC OPENER
Wake Forest defeated the Davidson Wildcats 5-0 on Wednesday at Spry Stadium
and then opened ACC play with a 1-1 tie at Virginia on Sunday. In the win
over Davidson, five different players, four of them reserves, scored for
the Deacons. Jamal Seale was the lone Wake starter to score, and reserves
Greg Krauss, Jaron Barbee, Viktor Litovka and Bobby Gehring provided the
rest of the offense for the Deacons. Goalkeeper Sean Conner delivered his
first shut out of the season. Gehring scored his second goal of the season
in the 1-1 tie with the Cavaliers. Conner had seven saves in the game.
WAKE KEEPS POSITION IN NSCAA POLL
Wake Forest remained 18th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of
America (NSCAA) poll for the second week in a row. The Deacs are one of
five ACC schools ranked in the poll. Maryland heads the list of ranked ACC
teams at fourth. Duke follows Maryland at fifth, while North Carolina is
12th and Virginia is ranked 16th.
LONTEEN AND BARBEE LEAD TEAM IN POINTS AND GOALS
Sophomore Chris Lonteen and junior Jaron Barbee are currently tied for the
team lead in points with eight apiece. Lonteen has three goals and two
assists, while Barbee has four goals. Barbee's four goals lead the team in
that category and Lonteen's three goals is second on the team. Sophomore
Jamal Seale leads the team in assists with four. Lonteen, junior Ben
Stafford and sophomore Matt Thompson are tied for second with two each.
Senior goalkeeper Sean Conner has played all 570 minutes this season. He
has 26 saves and has allowed just seven goals. He has one shut out against
Davidson.
HEAD COACH JAY VIDOVICH
Wake Forest head coach Jay Vidovich is in his sixth season as the Deacons'
head coach. He has compiled a record of 58-40-6 in his time in
Winston-Salem. He was an assistant coach at Wake from 1986-93 before being
promoted to his current position. Before coming to Wake, he was an
assistant at the University of Denver (1982), Regis College (1983) and Ohio
Wesleyan University (1984-85).
