CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-- Sophomore JAY MORGAN took individual medalist honors as the Wake Forest men's golf team captured the 1999 Cavalier Classic golf tournament title today at the University of Virginia. The tournament was played on the par-72, 6820-yard Birdwood Golf Course.

Playing with a lineup of one sophomore and four freshmen, the Demon Deacons recorded a final round score of 292 to finish at 7-under for the tournament, six strokes ahead of second-place Virginia. Morgan shot an even par 72 in the final round to finish at a career-best 6-under par and win the event by three strokes. It marked Morgan's first-ever collegiate title, his previous best finish was a eighth-place showing at the Windon Memorial Classic last fall.

Two Deacon freshmen also finished in the top five individually, as BUCK WILLIAMS (70-71-73) and BRENT WANNER (71-71-72) both tied for third place at 2-under. Wanner also finished in the top five in his first collegiate event last week, taking fifth place at The Ridges Intercollegiate.

Freshman CHAD WILFONG shot a 75 in the final round to tie for 32nd place at 6-over par, and redshirt freshman CORTLAND LOWE also carded a 75 to tie for 42nd overall at 8-over.

The Deacs are next in action at the Carpet Capital Fall Classic on Oct. 1-3 in Dalton, Ga.
