WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest men's soccer team defeated the Vanderbilt Commodores 3-0 on the final day of the 1999 Nike-Wake Forest Classic at Spry Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Ben Stafford gave the Deacs the lead early with a goal at the 37:11 mark off an assist from Kalle Siira. Jaron Barbee scored at 50:00 to increase Wake's lead to 2-0. Barbee's goal came off an assist from Chad Evans. Jamal Seale provided the final goal of the afternoon on a spectacular unassisted shot at the 69:03 mark.
With the win, Wake Forest improves to 5-0-3 on the year, while Vanderbilt falls to 4-3 with the loss.
In the early game, the UNC Charlotte 49ers (3-3) captured the Classic championship with a 2-1 win over the Richmond Spiders (4-3-1) in double overtime. Tournament MVP Dusty Reineke scored the winning goal for the 49ers in the second overtime period.
UNC Charlotte finished as the tournament champion. Wake Forest finished second, while Richmond came in third and Vanderbilt was fourth.
Wake Forest returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 2 when it travels to Greensboro, N.C. to take on the UNC Greensboro Spartans. Gametime is set for 7 p.m.
