Men's Soccer Picks Up Eight Spots In Polls

DEACONS TRAVEL TO UNC GREENSBORO
The 10th-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team will travel to Greensboro,
N.C. to take on the UNC Greensboro Spartans on Saturday, Oct. 2. Gametime
is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Deacons and Spartans have met 10 times, with
UNC Greensboro holding a 6-1-2 advantage. The first meeting between the two
teams was 1981. The game, which was played at Wake Forest, ended in a 2-2
tie. The latest meeting between the Deacons and the Spartans came in 1989
with the Spartans winning 2-1 at Wake.
WAKE WINS ONE, TIES ONE AT NIKE-WAKE FOREST CLASSIC
Wake Forest came in second in the 1999 Nike-Wake Forest Men's Soccer
Classic this past weekend at Spry Stadium. The Deacons began the Classic
with a 1-1 tie with the Richmond Spiders in the late game Friday night.
Jaron Barbee scored the only goal for the Deacs in the game. After two
scoreless overtime periods, the game ended in a 1-1 tie, the third of the
season for Wake Forest. On Sunday, the Deacons bounced back to defeat the
Vanderbilt Commodores 3-0. Ben Stafford, Jamal Seale and Jaron Barbee
provided the offense for Wake. UNC Charlotte won the Classic, leaving with
a 2-0 record in the tournament. Wake Forest was second at 1-0-1, while
Richmond finished third with a record of 0-1-1 and Vanderbilt was fourth at
0-2.
WAKE MOVES UP IN NSCAA POLL
Wake Forest (5-0-3) moved from 18th to 10th in this week's National Soccer
Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll. Wake Forest is one of three
ACC teams in the top 10 and one of four in the poll. Duke (5-0-2) heads the
list of ranked ACC teams at third. Maryland (6-2) is eighth, while North
Carolina (6-2) is ranked 24th in the poll.
BARBEE LEADS TEAM IN POINTS AND GOALS
Junior Jaron Barbee leads the team in points with 12 and goals with six.
Sophomore Chris Lonteen is in second in goals with three and is tied with
junior Jamal Seale for second place in total points with eight apiece.
Seale leads the team in assists with four. Lonteen, Matt Thompson, Ben
Stafford, Aaron Thomas and Chad Evans are all tied for second in assists
with two each. Goalkeeper Sean Conner has 38 saves and has allowed just
eight goals so far this season and has a goals against average of 0.89.
Through the first eight games of the season, Wake Forest has out scored its
opponents 23-8.
HEAD COACH JAY VIDOVICH
Wake Forest head coach Jay Vidovich is in his sixth season as the Deacons'
head coach. He has compiled a record of 59-40-7 in his time in
Winston-Salem. He was an assistant coach at Wake from 1986-93 before being
promoted to his current position. Before coming to Wake, he was an
assistant at the University of Denver (1982), Regis College (1983) and Ohio
Wesleyan University (1984-85).
