COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Wake Forest senior forward Anne Shropshire led 23rd-ranked Wake Forest to a 3-0 victory over Denver in the first round of the Falcon Women's Soccer Invitational on Friday night in Colorado Springs, Colo.
With the victory, Wake Forest improved to 2-0 on the year while Denver dropped to 0-1-1.
The Demon Deacons jumped on the scoreboard first at the 19:17 mark in the first half when sophomore Sarah Kate Noftsinger scored off a pass from sophomore Emily Taggart.
The Deacs stretched the lead to 2-0 at the 45:35 mark in the second half when junior Christie Melby found the back of the net from 10 yards out off a pass from freshman Gabi Lieb. Shropshire provided the Deacs' third goal of the night in the game's 52nd minute when she kicked in a pass from freshman Lindsey Griffin.
Wake Forest goalkeepers Erin Regan and Beth Klein combined to make three saves to preserve the Demon Deacons' second consecutive shutout. Wake Forest outshot Denver, 18-7.
The Demon Deacons will return to action on Sunday when they face host Air Force in the final day of action at the Falcon Invitational.
