Winston-Salem, NC - The 15th-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team was knocked off on Saturday night at Spry Stadium by 11th-ranked Clemson 2-1. With the game tied at one, Fabio Tambosi scored in the 66th minute to give Clemson the victory.
Wake Forest's six-game winning streak and eight-game unbeaten streak came to an end as the team suffered its first loss since September 16. The Demon Deacons drop to 9-4-1 on the year and 2-2 in ACC play. Clemson improves to 10-3-1 and 2-3 in the ACC.
"It was a great soccer game. We gave up a brilliant goal that would take the air out of most teams but our kids kept fighting. We stayed in the game the whole way and had chances to tie it even in the last ten seconds," head coach Jay Vidovich said. "Clemson showed why their a top-ten team tonight. They played a tremendous game."
Clemson controlled the play in the first half, outshooting the Demon Deacons by a 10-0 margin. Wake Forest was limited in its scoring opportunities for most of the game and didn't record its first shot until sophomore Adam Hakes header whistled just over the crossbar in the 54th minute.
Despite the wide margin in shots, sophomore captain Aaron Thomas tied the game in the 62nd minute with his third goal of the year. The preseason All-American took a short pass in the box from Ben Stafford before putting his shot on goal. Clemson goalkeeper Doug Warren got a piece of the shot but the ball trickled into the cage to knot the score at one.
Less than five minutes later, however, Clemson regained the lead on Tambosi's goal. Tambosi charged through the middle and received a thru-ball from Mark Lisi.
Though presented with several opportunities to tie the game in the second half, including a flurry in the goal area in the game's final ten seconds, Wake Forest could not tally the equalizer. The Deacs outshot the Tigers 6-5 in the last 45 minutes but recorded a season-low three shots on goal.
The game was physical and it struggled to find a rhythm as a total of 47 fouls and five cards were issued. Clemson's 30 fouls in the game was a season-high by a Wake Forest opponent.
Wake Forest returns to action on Wednesday at High Point. The game will serve as the team's final non-conference tuneup before finishing the regular season at North Carolina and Duke. Kickoff for Wednesday's game at High Point is 7:00 p.m.
