Wake Forest (7-7-1, 2-3) wraps up the regular season this week with three games in five days. The Demon Deacons will host Davidson College (13-5) Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 7:00 p.m. at Spry Stadium before playing their final home game of the season against ACC bully, No. 5 North Carolina (12-2, 3-2) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27 at Spry Stadium. Wake will round out the week at North Carolina State (9-5-3, 2-2-2) Sunday, Oct. 29 at 1:00 p.m.
Last Time Out
The Demon Deacons, 7-7-1 overall and 2-3 in the ACC, has had more than a week to reflect on a 3-0 loss at No. 5 Clemson on Oct. 17. Wake Forest held the Tigers to seven shots on goal, but were only able get two off themselves.
Davidson Wildcats
Davidson, 13-5 overall and 6-2 in the Southern Conference, is on a three-game winning streak. Last weekend, Davidson picked up two road victories, beating East Tennessee State 2-1 on Oct. 22 and Appalachian State 1-0 on Oct. 20. The Wildcats, coached by Kevin Hundley (Middlebury, 1976), are led by sophomore forward Heather Maloney (19 goals, 9 assists, 6 GWG) and senior goalkeeper Winnie Corrigan (1.37 GAA, .811 saves pct., 7 SHO).
Wake Forest leads the series with Davidson 4-1, winning the last meeting 4-0 on Sept. 9, 1998 at Davidson. The last time the two teams met in Winston-Salem was Oct. 19, 1997 and the Deacs won 2-0.
North Carolina Tar Heels
North Carolina, 12-2 overall and 3-2 in the ACC has had 10 days to prepare for the Deacs since a 2-3 overtime loss to No. 23 Florida State on Oct. 17. UNC, ranked as high as 5th by the NSCAA and as low as 8th by Soccer America, are the defending national champions as well as the defending ACC champions. The Tar Heels, coached by Anson Dorrance (North Carolina, 1974), are led by senior forward Meredith Florance (18 goals, 5 assists) and junior goalkeeper Kristin DePlatchett (0.54 GAA, 6 SHO). North Carolina owns the series with Wake Forest 10-0, winning both meetings last season. The Tar Heels won 4-0 on Oct. 31, 1999 in Chapel Hill and 3-0 in the ACC Championship game Nov. 6, 1999, also in Chapel Hill. The last time the teams met at Spry Stadium was Oct. 30, 1998 and UNC won 3-0. The Deacs have never scored against the Heels, while surrendering 45 goals to the 16-time National Champions.
Friday's game will be a reunion for some of players on these teams. Wake's junior forward Emily Taggart and Carolina's sophomore forward Kim Patrick played together at Foothill High in Pleasanton, Calif., and WFU freshman goalkeeper Meghan Webb and UNC freshman forward Jane Smith played together at Reynolds High in Winston-Salem, N.C.
North Carolina State Wolfpack
North Carolina State, 9-5-3 overall and 2-2-2 in the ACC going into Wednesday's game against Campbell, is coming off a 3-1 upset win over Duke and a 0-0 tie with Clemson last week. Ranked as high 15th this week by Soccer America and as low as unranked by the NSCAA and Soccer Buzz, NC State will host Campbell on Wednesday, Oct. 22 before taking on Wake Forest. The Wolfpack, coached by Laura Kerrigan (NC State, 1984) are led by ACC Player of the Week, sophomore goalkeeper Gretchen Lear (0.58 GAA, 5 SHO) and freshman forward Lindsey Underwood (6 goals, 2 assists). NC State leads the series with Wake Forest 5-3, but the Demon Deacons have won the last three meetings. Last season the teams met twice, Sept. 26, 1999 in Raleigh, which Wake Forest won 3-1, and in the ACC Tournament Nov. 4, 1999, which the Deacs took 4-0.
Sunday's match at NC State will serve as a homecoming of a couple of Demon Deacons who hail from the capital city. Sophomore goalkeeper Tracy Chao (Wake Forest-Rolesville High) and freshman midfielder Katherine Winstead (Broughton High) both call Raleigh, N.C., home.
Holding Down The Fort
Tracy Chao took over goaltending duties at the beginning of the season when both Demon Deacon goalkeepers Erin Regan and Kenna Healy suffered season-ending knee injuries during the preseason. Although Chao had never played goalie before, the athletic sophomore learned quick. Constantly improving, Chao holds a 1.63 goals against average, a .724 saves percentage and 1.5 shutouts in 1161 minutes in net.
Regan, a first team all-ACC selection last year as a sophomore, and Healy, a highly touted freshman, will both redshirt this season and return next year.
Interesting Numbers
Wake Forest has averaged 16.4 shots per game, while holding its opponents to only 10.4 shots per game. Nearly doubling their opponents' shot attempts (246-156) and corner kicks (78-49) are some abstract notes, but it points out the thorn in the Demon Deacons side this season - not being able to finish. There has obviously been no lack of offensive opportunities, but scoring 24 goals this season on 246 tries (.098) could lead one to believe that the Deacs have been struggling with scoring.
Next Up
The Demon Deacons will be back in action next week when they travel to Durham, N.C., to begin postseason action in the ACC Tournament, hosted by Duke University Nov. 2-5.
