WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest sophomore goalkeeper Tracy Chao was named the ACC Women's Soccer Player of the Week Monday. Chao, a 5-5 Raleigh, N.C. native, went 3-0 on the week, including two key conference victories.
Chao shared a shutout with backup keeper Leslie Goelz in a 4-0 win at home versus Davidson on Tuesday, Oct. 24. Then she handed the defending national champions and then-ranked No. 5 North Carolina its first-ever conference shutout as Wake Forest beat the Tar Heels 1-0 at home on Friday, Oct. 27. Then, on Sunday, Oct. 29 playing at North Carolina State, Chao held the Wolfpack to just one goal as the Demon Deacons defeated NC State 2-1 in double overtime.
A reserve defender as a freshman last year, Chao moved back to goalkeeper this season for the Deacs, despite never playing the position before, after Wake lost both goalkeepers to season-ending knee surgeries before the season even started. After turning the goaltending duties over to Goelz late in the Davidson game, Chao returned to the game as a field player and almost scored, sending a shot just over the Wildcats' crossbar.
In 253:35 minutes in net last week, Chao only allowed one goal, while collecting 16 saves. Chao, 7-7-1 in goal this season, has a 1.40 GAA, a .763 saves percentage and three shutouts.
No. 22 Wake Forest, 10-7-1 overall and 4-3 in the ACC finished the regular season tied for second place in the ACC. The Demon Deacons enter the ACC Tournament, Nov. 2-3, 5 at Duke University's Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C., as the second seed, where they will face No. 16 Florida State in the quarterfinals at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2.
