DALTON, Ga. --- Despite posting its highest score in the third and final round on Sunday, the Wake Forest men's golf team still moved up two spots in the standings to finish eighth at the Carpet Capital Classic, held at The Farm Golf Club. The Deacs posted a 13-over 301 on Sunday's final 18, but the score was the second-lowest team total of the day, as only one team, East Tennessee, broke the 300 barrier with a 299.
The Deacons finished with a 28-over 892 for the tournament on the par 72, 6,906-yard course at The Farm. They finished just one stroke behind sixth-place finishers UCLA and South Carolina. Georgia Tech, who led the 15-team field going into the final round, won the event with a six-over 870, narrowly edging second-place Clemson by one stroke. The tournament included 10 teams which are currently ranked in the nation's top 25.
Playing in his home state, Wake Forest sophomore Cortland Lowe (Augusta, GA) posted a career-best finish, placing in a tie for sixth individually. Lowe turned in a 75 in the final round after firing a 75 and a career-low 67 on the first 36 holes. He finished the tournament at one-over par (217).
Deacon junior Jay Morgan (Choctaw, OK) recovered from an 81 in Saturday's round to shoot par on Sunday, finishing in 42nd place with an 11-over 227. Teammate Chad Wilfong (Thomasville, NC) tied with Morgan after turning in a 77 on the final 18. Other Deacon scores included freshman Bill Haas (Greer, SC), who finished 51st after rounds of 74-74-82, and sophomore Brent Wanner (Chatham, MA), who recorded 77s in all three rounds and finished 55th.
The Wake Forest men's golf team returns to action Oct. 15-16, when it competes in the Duke Golf Classic at the Duke University Golf Course in Durham, NC.
