In light of Wednesday's Presidential Debate on the campus of Wake Forest University, the notes for the UNC Asheville game take on a political theme.
Wake Takes A Break From ACC
It's not quite like going to Camp David but the Deacons (6-3-1, 2-1) are taking a vacation from the ACC as they venture on a three-game stretch outside the conference beginning tonight with UNC Asheville.
Wake enters tonight's contest on a three-game winning streak and a five-game unbeaten streak, both high water marks on the season.
The Bulldogs enter the secured perimeter with a 5-7 record, including a 1-4 mark on the road. But UNC Asheville, winners of three of their last four, is playing well as of late.
Stafford For President
Senior forward Ben Stafford could run for office considering the senior campaign his having.
Like Al Gore, Stafford hails from Tennessee. Unlike Gore, Stafford is leading Wake Forest with ten goals. Two of his four gamewinning goals have been overtime winners.
Vartughian Vetos Wolfpack Comeback
On Sunday against N.C. State, the Deacs jumped out to a 2-0 lead but saw the Wolfpack score once and threaten to tie the game with a penalty kick.
But senior keeper Rob Vartughian made the critical save to preserve the lead and clinch the win.
Deacons Might Be Bush'ed After Sunday Game
Tonight's game is the second game in slightly over 48 hours for the Deacons. Wake hasn't played on so little rest since the first two games of the season at Connecticut. On September 1, Wake upset current #1 UConn but lost in overtime less than one day later to St. John's.
Wake Has Gore'd UNC Asheville In Past
There's no debate about it. Wake Forest has dominated the all-time series with UNC Asheville. The Deacs hold a landslide 7-0-0 all-time series lead against the Bulldogs. Wake has outscored Asheville 32-3 in the seven games, including a 6-1 win in 1998 at Spry.
Commander-in-Chief
Head Coach Jay Vidovich is closing in on the all-time wins mark in Wake Forest history. With a career record of 73-46-10, he is just four wins from tying his mentor, Walt Chyzowych.
The Pollsters
There's some debate as to where the Deacons belong in the polls. The media poll lists Wake Forest 14th for the second straight week while the coaches' poll omits the Deacs from its top 25 for the second straight week.
