WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Atlantic Coast Conference announced the 2000 All-ACC Women's Soccer Team and All-Freshman Team, along with player, coach and rookie of the year award winners Wednesday night at the ACC Women's Soccer Championship banquet at the Hilton in Durham, N.C. Five Wake Forest players received awards. Emily Taggart and Joline Charlton were named first-team all-ACC and Stacy Roeck earned second team honors. A.B. Robbins and Katherine Winstead were selected to the all-freshman team.
Taggart, a junior forward from Pleasanton, Calif., adds the all-ACC certificate to her collection of a second-team selection in 1998 and a first-team selection last year. A two-time all-Region honoree and preseason all-American selection, Taggart also earned 1998 ACC Rookie of the Year honors and was named Freshman All-America by Soccer America. She has scored six goals on the season and recorded five assists this season, placing her second on the all-time scoring list at Wake Forest with 18 career goals and 14 career assists.
Charlton, a sophomore forward from Stone Mountain, Ga., improved upon her second-team all-ACC billing last year by earning first-team honors this season. The 1999 ACC Rookie of the Year, Charlton was named to the all-tournament squads at both the Santa Clara Classic and Wake Forest Invitational this season. A member of the all-tournament team at the 1999 ACC Tournament, she has led the Demon Deacons in scoring the last two years and is third on the all-time scoring list at Wake Forest with 18 career goals and 10 assists.
Roeck, a junior defender/forward from Solona Beach, Calif., has anchored the Demon Deacon defense the last three years as the starting sweeper. She shifted to forward for a few games this season to add some scoring punch for Wake Forest and delivered, scoring six goals and assisting three others. Her second-team all-ACC award is her second, earning the honor last year as well. A Member of the last two ACC Tournament all-tournament squads, Roeck looks to keep that streak going this weekend at this year's tournament.
Robbins, a freshman defender from Richmond, Va., has seen quality minutes in every match this season, starting 14 games. She has provided steady, smart play and hard nosed defense at the stopper position. Robbins has assisted two goals and was named to the Santa Clara Classic All-Tournament Team on Oct. 1. The 1999 Virginia Player of the Year at Mills Godwin High, Robbins can now add ACC all-freshman team honors to her collection.
Winstead, a freshman midfielder from Raleigh, N.C., played large amounts of every match this season, starting 10 games. She assisted two goals as a major presence at center midfield for the Deacs, playing with the heart and smarts of a veteran.
No. 22 Wake Forest, 10-7-1 overall and 4-3 in the ACC finished the regular season tied for second place in the ACC. The Demon Deacons enter the ACC Tournament, Nov. 2-3, 5 at Duke University's Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C., as the second seed, where they will face No. 16 Florida State in the quarterfinals at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2.
