Winston-Salem, NC - The Wake Forest women's basketball team opened its exhibition schedule with a 94-52 win over the Smokey Mountain Swarm on Saturday night at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Coliseum. Senior guard Janae Whiteside led the balanced Deacon effort with 22 points.
Wake Forest never trailed in the contest and led 44-21 at the break. The Deacons controlled the play on both ends of the floor. On offense, the Deacs shot 54 percent for the game. On defense, Wake forced 28 turnovers and made 23 steals.
Fourteen different players scored in the game and 13 players registered at least ten minutes. Senior guard Val Klopfer played the most of any Deacon with 20 minutes. She was the only player that didn't score but was busy dishing out seven assists.
Wake Forest dominated in the paint, outscoring the Swarm 28-10, and on the glass, with a 46-36 rebounding margin. Senior Olivia Dardy totaled a game-high nine rebounds to go with eight points.
"A game like this gives us things to look at and work on. I told my team this was like a practice SAT test," head coach Charlene Curtis said. "I feel like we got off to an excellent start. We played really hard and put up some good offense. We're not ready for Appalachian State (the season opener) but we're getting there. Overall, I was very pleased."
The Deacons have another exhibition tune-up on Friday against Dynamo Kiev of the Ukraine. Tipoff at Joel Coliseum is slated for 7:00 p.m. The regular season opener is November 19 at Appalachian State.
