WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - With one of golf's four major golf tournaments currently taking place on the other side of the Atlantic, one of the very minor golf events took place here today at Tanglewood's Championship course.
A foursome called "Kent Touch This," featuring Wake Forest football coach Jim Caldwell, remarkably birdied the final four holes to win the Deacon Football/Media Golf Outing. Playing a Captain's Choice format, Caldwell, Cameron Kent (WXII-TV news anchor), Al Myatt (News & Observer) and Bobby Kennedy (WFU running backs coach) turned in a 7-under par 63 on the challenging Tanglewood course.
Kent Touch This, perhaps the silliest of all the team names, made a late run to hold off a team called "Rath-er Be Working," featuring Dan Rath (also of WXII-TV), Tom Kleinlein and Joy Carr of the Wake Forest football staff, and former Deacon SID Phil Warshauer, by three strokes.
The winning foursome, however, did not leave Tanglewood without controversy. Kennedy, perhaps the least-skilled of any golfer in the field, left the Tanglewood course after nine holes (and after grabbing a free lunch on the way out). Without Kennedy, a self-admitted hacker, better golfers such as Kent, Caldwell and Myatt received extra opportunities.
"You've heard of addition-by-subtraction, haven't you?" one of Kennedy's teammates, who wished to remain anonymous, asked.
Brink of Del-struction, another poorly-named team, finished third but were perhaps the biggest underachievers of the day. With John Dell, who covers the sport of golf for the Winston-Salem Journal, and WFU offensive coordinator Eddie Williamson, who clearly sandbagged when turning in his handicap, more was expected than a three-under par 67.
The most unconventional team, Klacik Golf, would have made golf traditionalists cringe. Team captain John Klacik (WFU quarterbacks coach) enjoyed hitting out of divots and frequently putted with a sand wedge, while Jim Connors (WXLV-TV) nearly fell down on his follow-through and once came close to injuring teammate Skeeter Francis by tossing a metal divot repair tool the length of a green.
Tommy Elrod of the Deacon football staff narrowly edged out Klacik for the men's longest drive contest. Joy Carr (WFU football office) held off Clara Andrews (WFU media relations) for the women's longest drive. Ken DeVanney (WXLV-TV) took home the closest-to-the-pin award. All winners chose not to receive actual awards in order to retain their amateur status.
