WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- As the 2000 preseason continues, the Wake Forest football team held a two-hour practice session under the hot sun and 90 degree temperatures on Tuesday. After holding a technical practice in the morning to work on the kicking game, the Demon Deacons went full force in the afternoon session.
"We worked extremely hard today," said head coach Jim Caldwell. "This afternoon we came out and wanted to go pretty hard, particularly in the heat, so we could get adjusted to it."
After sitting out most of Monday?s practice with a sore knee, sophomore quarterback C.J. Leak was back in action as the Deacs' top signal-caller on Tuesday afternoon.
"Yesterday we didn't practice him, to let him rest his knee a little bit," said Caldwell. "Today, he came out and did extremely well. He didn?t show any signs at all of an injury."
As they near the midpoint of preseason drills, the Deacs will conduct a scrimmage on Wednesday afternoon. The team will head over to Groves Stadium for the scrimmage around 4 p.m.
"We'll get a better look at them in the scrimmage tomorrow afternoon,? Caldwell said, "so we'll have a good feel for where we need to continue to improve. We?ve still got a lot of work to do."
The 2000 campaign begins Thursday, August 31 at 7:30 p.m. when Wake Forest hosts Appalachian State in Groves Stadium. Tickets are available by calling 1-888-758-3322.
