WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - A challenging non-conference schedule that includes December home games with Kansas and Georgia and road games at Michigan, Temple and Cincinnati highlight the non-conference portion of Wake Forest's 28-game regular season schedule in 2000-01.
The Demon Deacons open the 2000-01 campaign here Nov. 16-17 when they host the two-day, four-team BCA (Black Coaches Association) Classic at Lawrence Joel Coliseum.
"Without question this is our most difficult schedule, one that offers a real challenge at home and on the road," said head coach Dave Odom, who will enter his 12th season at Wake Forest this winter. "It is a schedule that demands we be at our very best every night.
"I know our team is excited by the opportunity the schedule presents."
Following the BCA Classic, the Deacons face a tough road test at Richmond (Nov. 20) before hosting Campbell (Nov. 25). On Nov. 28, Wake will play in Ann Arbor (Mich.) against Michigan in the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
The December schedule includes home games with perennial power Kansas (Dec. 7) and Georgia (Dec. 16). On Dec. 21, Wake hits the road to play Temple in Philadelphia. On Jan. 27, the Deacs take a break from ACC play to visit Cincinnati.
Wake will embark on ACC league play Jan. 2 against Virginia in Lawrence Joel Coliseum.
The Deacons, 22-14 a year ago, return nine letterwinners off a team that captured the NIT championship last season.
Schedule Notes:
- At least 22 regular season games will be televised either regionally or nationally. The Deacons will play on ESPN six times ? at Michigan (Nov. 28), vs. Kansas (Dec. 7), at Temple (Dec. 21), at North Carolina (Jan. 6), at Maryland (Jan. 17) and vs. NC State (Jan. 31). The Deacs will also make appearances on CBS (Feb. 24 vs. Duke), ABC (Jan. 27 at Cincinnati) and ESPN2 (Feb. 17 vs. Maryland).
- The 2000-01 schedule includes 10 teams that participated in postseason play last season, including seven NCAA Tournament teams (Cincinnati, Duke, Kansas, Maryland, North Carolina, S.C. State and Temple).
- The schedule includes first-ever meetings with Michigan and South Carolina State.
- The Deacs hold all-time series leads against nine of 16 opponents on the slate, not including Michigan and S.C. State.
- The late-January game against Cincinnati isn't the first time the Deacs have scheduled a non-conference road game during the ACC season. Last season, Wake Forest played at Davidson. Wake and Missouri had a home-and-home series in 1997 and 1998 in the middle of ACC play.
- 1999-2000 opponents Campbell, Navy, Temple and Georgia make return appearances on the 2000-01 agenda. Wake Forest defeated Campbell, Navy and Temple. The Deacs dropped a heartbreaker to Georgia 68-67.
- The Deacons enter the season on a five-game winning streak. Only defending NCAA champion Michigan State can claim a longer streak. The Spartans won 11 straight on their way to the national title.
