WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- With just three days remaining before the season opener with Appalachian State, the gridiron Deacs held a one- and-a-half hour practice session on Monday afternoon. The team worked out in shoulder pads and shorts instead of full pads as the clock ticks closer to kickoff.
"We're trying to wind it down a little bit," said head coach Jim Caldwell, who begins his eighth season at the helm of the Wake Forest football program Thursday night. "But you always feel like you need a little bit more time. We did a lot of good things (today), but we still need some work. Fortunately we have two more days of practice."
The team will hold just two more practice sessions before the meeting with the Mountaineers. Tuesday afternoon's practice will be a little shorter than Monday's, and the Wednesday session, which takes place at 7:30 pm in Groves Stadium, will most likely be in shorts and helmets (no pads).
"At the beginning it seems like you have plenty of time to get prepared, but now we're certainly restricted with the number of minutes we have left to get everything lined up," Caldwell said. "But I think we'll be ready to play."
"We've improved all across the board," he continued. "But typically you don't know exactly what you have until you've had the opportunity to line up against the competition. We'll certainly be tested on Thursday."
