GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Wake Forest University women's soccer team, ranked 12th in the nation, defeated East Carolina 4-1 Tuesday evening at Bunting Field. Junior forward Stacy Roeck led the Demon Deacons with two goals.
The Deacs picked apart the Pirate defense, outshooting ECU 16-2. Roeck blasted a shot from the top of the penalty box into the upper left corner of the goal, opening the scoring in the 20th minute. She was assisted by Joline Charlton. Charlton found Roeck again seven minutes later for the game-winning goal. The score remained 2-0 for the remainder of the half.
Emily Taggart put away a cross from freshman A.B. Robbins midway through the second half to put Wake up 3-0. Kim Sandhoff beat Deacon goalkeeper Leslie Goelz for the Pirates only goal at the 70 minute mark. Charlton added the fourth and final Wake Forest goal with a minute left in the match assisted by Taggart.
East Carolina falls to 1-1-0 on the season and Wake Forest improves to 2-0-0. The Demon Deacons return to action this weekend, when they travel to Columbia, Mo., to compete in the University of Missouri's Ellis Copy Tiger Invitational. Wake will face Ohio State at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1 and Missouri at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 3.
