Demon Deacons Head To Show Me State For Missouri Tourney Wake Forest takes off for Columbia, Mo., this weekend to play in the Ellis Copy Tiger Invitational hosted by the University of Missouri. The Demon Deacons, ranked 12th in the nation with a 2-0 record, will open the tournament with Ohio State at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1 and then conclude the tourney with Missouri at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 3. The Buckeyes are 0-2 on the year and the Tigers have an even 1-1 mark. The matches will be played at Missouri's home field, Audrey J. Walton Soccer Complex (capacity 2,500).
The trip will be a homecoming of sorts for freshman forward Alena Thom. Thom, who hails from Jefferson City, Mo., is expecting several friends and family to be in attendance.
Last Time Out The Demon Deacons are coming off a 4-1 rout over East Carolina earlier this week. Wake Forest beat the Pirates Tuesday, Aug. 29 on the road. The Deacs opened the season with a 3-0 win over UNC Greensboro on last Friday, Aug. 25. Wake shutout the Spartans in the curtain raiser at home.
Ohio State Buckeyes Ohio State, 0-2, is coming off a pair of loses at home last weekend falling to Oakland 1-4 on Friday, Aug. 25 and then succumbing to Syracuse 2-3 in overtime on Sunday, Aug. 27. The Buckeyes, coached by Lori Walker, finished 12-6-2 last season with a 5-4-1 mark in the Big 10. This will be the first-ever meeting between Wake Forest and Ohio State.
Four different people have scored OSU's four goals. Sophomore forward Lindsay Eckles leads the team in scoring with one goal and one assist. She led the squad in scoring last season, tallying nine goals and two assists. The Buckeyes will play Florida State on Sunday, Sept. 3, an opponent that the Deacons will also play this season. Missouri and Iowa both also appear on both the Wake Forest and Ohio State schedules this year.
Missouri Tigers Missouri, 1-1, split its opening weekend games, topping Creighton 4-1 on Friday, Aug. 25 and falling 1-2 to Purdue on Sunday, Aug. 27. The Tigers, coached by Bryan Blitz, finished 14-8-1 last season with a 6-3-1 mark in the Big 12. MU reached the NCAA tournament last year and is ranked 25th in the Soccer Times poll. Wake Forest leads the series 1-0, beating Missouri 4-1 on Sept. 25, 1998 at the Irish Key Bank Classic in South Bend, Ind. Wake Forest junior forward, then freshman, Stacy Roeck scored the first goal of the game. Missouri senior forward, then sophomore, Kristin Boeker scored the only goal of the day for the Tigers.
Freshman forward Adriene Davis leads Missouri with a pair of goals and assists and junior goalkeeper Graham Watson has a 1.20 GAA with a .800 saves percentage. Senior forward Nikki Thole has been selected preseason All-American by several publications.
Sunday's game won't be the last Wake Forest sees of the Tigers. Missouri is playing in the Wake Forest Nike Invitational Sept. 15, 17 at Spry Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C., not against the Deacs again though.
Movin' On Up Stacy Roeck, a junior for Wake Forest, has anchored the Demon Deacon defense the last two seasons as the sweeper. With the arrival of freshman defender Katherine Winstead, coach da Luz has moved Roeck up to forward. The transition seems to have worked pretty well so far. Roeck is leading the team with three goals and one assist.
Rookies Adjusting Well Winstead has established herself at sweeper and fellow freshman A.B. Robbins has made an immediate impact in the midfield. She has started both games so far and has taken three shots. Against UNC Greensboro last week, she earned an assist.
Help Yourself Sophomore midfielder Lindsey Griffin led the team with eight assists last season and did not score a single goal. She scored two in the season opener against UNC Greensboro last Friday.
Goelz In Goal Highly touted junior goalkeeper Erin Regan could not have been more excited for the upcoming season when a bit of bad luck struck. Just as the second period of a exhibition match with Minnesota got underway Aug. 19, Regan planted her foot, turned to jump and felt something pop in her knee. The results of her MRI were inconclusive, but there was some damage done and she is rehabilitating the knee now. Named first team all-ACC last year, Regan will be out for at least two weeks. Her backup, freshman phenom Kenna Healy hurt her knee in a summer league about a month before reporting to Wake. She will most likely redshirt this season.
Enter Leslie Goelz. A sophomore goalkeeper who did not see any game action last season as the third string keeper is now the last, the only line of defense. Untested so far this season, Goelz has two saves to her credit and only one goal against. She may split time in net with sophomore Tracy Chao, a reserve defender recently converted to goalkeeper. Chao tended goal the second half of the UNC Greensboro match last Friday and got a shared shutout.
Up To Her Old Tricks After leading the team in scoring last season, earning second team all-ACC honors and winning the ACC Rookie of the Year award, sophomore Joline Charlton is back at it. The forward from Stone Mountain, Ga., assisted a pair of first half goals Tuesday at East Carolina and then scored one herself with a minute remaining in the match. Fast as lightning, Charlton has been improving her accuracy, placing four of five shots taken so far on goal (.800 SOG%).
Red White And Blue Junior midfielder Emily Taggart has assisted a goal in both games this season and she scored one against UNC Greensboro last Friday also. Named a preseason All-American by College Soccer Online, Taggart took home all-ACC and all-Southeast Region accolades for the second straight year last season.
Next Up Following the Missouri tournament, the Demon Deacons will return to action Sept. 12 at Charlotte for a 7:00 p.m. match. Wake Forest will host the Nike Invitational the following weekend Sept. 15, 17 at Spry Stadium. Missouri, California and Virginia will participate with the latter two taking turns playing the Deacs.
