
Men's Golf Finishes Seventh At The Ridges Intercollegiate

The Wake Forest men's golf squad opened the 2000-01 campaign with a seventh-place finish at the Bank of Tennessee/The Ridges Intercollegiate over the weekend. The Deacs, ranked 14th nationally in the preseason, turned in rounds of 290-293-291 to finish with a 10-over 874, tying for seventh with fifth-ranked Houston and 17th-ranked North Florida. The two-day, 54-hole event took place at the par 72, 7,038-yard course at The Ridges Golf and Country Club.
Team champion TCU, ranked 13th in the preseason, jumped out to an early lead with rounds of 279 and 280 in Saturday's 36 holes. The Horned Frogs turned in a 292 on Sunday, one stroke back of Wake Forest, but held on to their lead to defeat second-place South Carolina by three strokes. Of the 14 teams who competed in the event, nine are among the nation's top 25 in the preseason rankings and 11 advanced to the 2000 NCAA championship.
Deacon junior Jay Morgan (Choctaw, OK) and sophomore Chad Wilfong (Thomasville, NC) posted Wake Forest's best finish by tying for 16th place individually with an even-par 216. Morgan fired a three-under 69 on the final 18 to close out his scorecard with 70-77-69. Wilfong had steady play throughout the tournament, turning in rounds of 72-73-71. The duo finished eight strokes back of individual medalist Johan Kok of South Carolina, who carded an eight-under 208.
Other Deacon participants included sophomore Brent Wanner (Chatham, MA), who finished four strokes back of Morgan and Wilfong with a 220 (74-71-75), placing 32nd. Freshman Bill Haas (Greer, SC), playing in his first intercollegiate tournament, turned in a six-over 222 (74-72-76) and placed 39th. Junior Bart DeLuca (Baltimore, MD) finished in 71st with rounds of 78-77-77. Wake Forest's Buck Williams (Raleigh, NC) also competed in the tournament as an individual, placing 74th (80-72-84). As a group, the Deacs recorded seven rounds of par or better.
Wake Forest next competes in the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, GA from October 6-8.
