Men's Soccer Ranks Fifth In Latest NSCAA Rankings

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-- The Wake Forest men's soccer team jumped eight places to fifth in the most recent poll released by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America on Monday, the team?s highest position since November 1, 1999, when the Deacs were ranked fourth.
Wake Forest heads the list of four ACC schools ranked in the top 25. Virginia slipped to No. 17 from No. 3 this week. Maryland and North Carolina are No. 23 and No. 25, respectively.
The Deacs are off to a 2-1 start with wins over No. 2 Connecticut and UNC Greensboro. The Deacons have been led by senior forward Ben Stafford?s four goals. Sophomore preseason All-American Aaron Thomas has chipped in two goals.
Senior Rob Vartughian has played all three games in net for the Deacs. He has posted a 1.55 goals against average and a .800 save percentage.
Wake Forest travels to Lynchburg, Va., on Tuesday to take on Liberty University. The team's ACC opener is on Saturday against Virginia. Another capacity crowd is expected for the 7:00 p.m. kickoff at Spry Stadium.
