WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team, ranked 20th in the nation, lost at home Sunday afternoon to Iowa, 1-2 at Spry Stadium. The Demon Deacons could not find an answer for the Hawkeyes two first half goals.
"The team obviously underestimated their opponents," said Wake Forest head coach Tony da Luz. "We just can't score goals."
Kate Walse headed in a cross from Linzy Wolman three minutes into the game to give the Hawkeyes a 1-0 lead. At the 25 minute mark, Wolman found Sarah Kiefer at the top of the box who chipped in a shot for Iowa's game-winning goal.
With ten minutes remaining in the half Stacy Roeck punched a shot in for the Deac's only score. Roeck, who has five goals on the season for Wake Forest, was assisted by Liz McDowell. Down by a goal, Wake Forest rallied in the second half oushooting the Hawkeyes 17-4 in the second half, but none got past Iowa goalkeeper Liz Hendel, who collected 10 saves on the day.
Wake Forest falls to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in the ACC while Iowa improves to 7-3 overall and 1-2 in the Big Ten. The Demon Deacons return to action next weekend when they travel to Santa Clara, Calif., to play No. 5 Stanford and No. 19 Santa Clara in the Santa Clara/Nike Invitational.
