WINSTON-SALEM -- Wake Forest head basketball coaches Dave Odom, Charlene Curtis and the Deacon basketball teams are challenging the Wake Forest and Winston-Salem community to a road race against cancer.
"Run With The Deacs," a fun-run and 5K race to raise money for the Brian Piccolo Cancer Fund Drive at Wake Forest, will be held Friday at 4 p.m. on campus in conjunction with Family Weekend festivities. Odom, Curtis, their staffs and players will lead all participants on the race/walk on the cross country course.
The public is invited -- as runners, walkers or spectators.
Entry fee for participants is $10 with all money being donated to the Brian Piccolo Cancer Fund Drive in memory of the former Wake Forest and Chicago Bears great. This fall marks the 21st year of the student-initiated Piccolo Drive with over $480,000 raised to directly support the research and treatment of cancer through the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Wake Forest University. Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity is co-sponsoring the event.
Pre-registration for the event is being handled through the Student Development office, Benson Center 317 (336-758-5921) with day-of-event registration at the Water Tower field at 3 p.m. Each participant will receive a "Run With The Deacs" Nike T-shirt and will be eligible for additional prizes awarded to the top three finishers in four men's and women's age divisions.
